SIL, in plain words

Supported independent living (SIL) is funding for a support worker to help or supervise you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

You may share a support worker or have an individual support worker, depending on how much help you need. The support worker helps or supervises day-to-day tasks within your home.

Built around you

Not a template. Your life.

We look at your needs, your lifestyle and what you want from life, and build SIL support around them.

  • Shared or individual support, depending on how much help you need
  • Support that builds your skills, so you can do more yourself
  • We work with your family and your support coordinator
Shared living

SIL in shared living homes

Goaldis delivers SIL supports across nine shared living homes in Sydney, with 24-hour support arrangements. Each resident's support is designed around their own goals, preferences and assessed support needs.

In our shared living support arrangements, disability support staff assist residents with personal care, daily routines, meal preparation, household activities and developing independence.

Staff work across planned shifts, follow each participant's support plan, keep notes on what matters, communicate at handover and raise concerns in line with our service procedures. Teams coordinate across shifts to support continuity, safety, choice and taking part in everyday life.

Goaldis provides the support in each home. SIL funding relates to help and supervision with daily living tasks: rent and ordinary living costs are separate from SIL support funding.

A typical day and evening

An illustration, not a roster: each person's day follows their own support plan and routines.

Morning and day

Help to get up, personal care and breakfast, then household tasks, appointments, outings and building skills.

Evening

Preparing and sharing a meal, time to relax, and getting ready for the night, at each person's pace.

Overnight

Support set by each person's needs, service agreement and funding, such as a sleepover or awake staff.

Your support plan

Choice and rights

You choose how you live your day, and families stay involved when you agree.

Questions

Questions people ask

Still unsure? Call 1300 212 035. There are no silly questions.

Moving from hospital or the family home? Read our guide: questions to ask before moving into SIL housing.

Goaldis Community Services is a registered NDIS provider: check the NDIS Commission register. This page is general information from Goaldis, checked against official NDIS sources. Current as at October 2026.

Where do you provide SIL?

In Greater Western Sydney (Parramatta to the foothills of the Blue Mountains), Ryde and Macquarie Park (Gladesville to North Ryde), and The Hills (Norwest, Cherrybrook, Kellyville). Live somewhere else in Sydney? Call 1300 212 035 and ask us.

Does SIL pay for rent or groceries?

No. SIL can't be used for things like rent or other day-to-day expenses like groceries. It pays for the support worker who helps or supervises you. Source: NDIS.

Does my SIL provider need to be registered?

Yes. From 1 October 2026, SIL can only be delivered by providers that are registered, or that applied to register before that date. This applies however your plan is managed. Goaldis is a registered NDIS provider, and you can check our registration.

Will I share a support worker?

It depends on how much help you need. You may share a support worker or have an individual support worker. We talk it through with you before anything starts.

Is SIL support 24 hours a day?

SIL is funding for a support worker to help or supervise you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The shared living homes we support have 24-hour support arrangements; the type of overnight support, such as a sleepover or awake staff, depends on each person's needs, service agreement and funding.

Is SIL the same as housing?

No. SIL pays for support workers who help or supervise you at home; it does not pay for rent or the house. Specialist disability accommodation (SDA) is separate funding for homes built for people with very high support needs, and some people have both SDA and SIL in their plans. Goaldis provides the support. Source: NDIS.

How are staff shifts organised?

Shifts are planned around each resident's support plan, and each shift hands over to the next.

Can I choose my own routines?

Yes. Your support plan is built around your goals, preferences and routines, and we review it with you as things change.

How do I start?

Call 1300 212 035, send us a message, or ask your support coordinator to refer you.
